A short vacation in Freiburg – the most important sightseeing locations in 24 hours

Looking for a short yet relaxed city trip? The perfect combination of culture, cuisine, relaxation, and good weather? Then you’ve come to the right place! Discover Freiburg’s historic old town in 24 hours and enjoy an ambiance that equals the French art of savoir-vivre.

Morning:

"When I close my eyes, I have the feeling that I am at a colorful, open-air market in Southern France. Aromas of fresh fruit, herbs and flowers tickle my nose and the sun warms my face."

The Münstermarkt (Cathedral Market) creates a vacation feeling – not only with the locals. After breakfast at one of our relaxed cafés, spend some time strolling among the stalls filled with regional produce and international delicacies. Freiburg's landmark, the Münster (Cathedral), offers a wonderful backdrop.

From the lively present you now step into the past, which is omnipresent in Freiburg's narrow streets and the city's architectural legacy. Admire historic buildings, such as the 16th century Historische Kaufhaus (Historical Merchants' Hall), with its eye-catching dark red, intricately decorated facade.

The unique charm of the picturesque narrow streets, lined with restored facades adorned with flowers, can be experienced during a stroll through Konviktstraße or Klein Venedig (Little Venice). The little Bächle streams ripple through the narrow streets and charming boutiques invite you to window shop.

Midday:

If you are still hungry after sampling the many delights of the Cathedral Market, such as a Lange Rote sausage or a vegan alternative at the tofu stand – then it's time for a lunch break.

How about a Baden Brägele (roasted potatoes) or a Brazilian feijoada? In the Markthalle (Market Place), you can feast on a large selection of international dishes and regional delicacies in a lively atmosphere with the locals. Or you can venture into the so-called "Bermuda Triangle." In Freiburg's trendy nightlife district around the Martinstor (Martin’s gate), you will find several restaurants and bars.

Well fortified, you continue on: For art and culture enthusiasts, we recommend a visit to the renowned Augustinermuseum, which houses an impressive collection of works from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period.

Nature lovers will enjoy 'climbing' the Schlossbergs (Castle mountain). 180 meters above the historic Old Town, the Kanonenplatz or the Schlossberg tower offer spectacular views over Freiburg all the way to the Vosges Mountains. We recommend: Enjoy a shandy in the beer garden above the rooftops of the city.

A perfect overview can also be provided on one of Freiburg's city tours, which can be booked at the tourist information office.

Afternoon

The pace for your afternoon is more relaxing and leisurely. Freiburg's cafés und pastry shops tempt with sweet indulgences such as Black Forest cake and Freiburg Bobbele (chocolate).

Experience the finest wine culture at the Alten Wache (House of Baden Wines). Relax with a glass of good Baden wine and enjoy the historical backdrop and view of the Cathedral.

For those who still have some energy to burn, you can shop at the small boutiques in Freiburg's narrow streets and at the well-known stores on the main shopping street.

Evening:

Music and the performing arts are omnipresent in Freiburg. From a rustic jazz cellar to the Alemannische Bühne theater, classical sounds in the Konzerthaus (concert hall) or Shakespeare at the Freiburg Theater – you are sure to find the perfect evening program during your stay.

As a student city, Freiburg naturally has a vibrant nightlife. Enjoy a relaxed beer outdoors at the end of your day in the summer or toast your visit to Freiburg in one of the countless bars and pubs.
