Wallgraben Theater
A small theater of great importance. This small cellar theater was founded in 1953 by a group of actor-students and is one of the oldest private theater companies in Germany.
The Wallgraben Theater is one of Freiburg’s most historic cultural venues and, since its founding in 1953, has combined high-quality theater with contemporary themes. This “small theater” is located in a historic vaulted cellar beneath Freiburg’s City Hall and offers a particularly intimate theatrical atmosphere.
The repertoire ranges from adapted classics to modern literature and contemporary German-language drama. In addition to its own productions, the program is complemented by guest performances, readings, and special cultural events. Under the artistic direction of Regine Effinger and Hans Poeschl, the theater continually refines its artistic vision while remaining closely attuned to the spirit of the times.
A special highlight is the Rathaushofspiele, which have been held in the courtyard of Freiburg City Hall since 1976. During the summer months, an atmospheric open-air stage is set up there, where theatrical productions and concerts are performed against a historic backdrop.
The Wallgraben Theater is a mainstay of Freiburg’s cultural scene and is known for its diverse repertoire, creative productions, and special theatrical experiences in a unique atmosphere.
