Cinemas in Freiburg

Lights out, film off!

Freiburg is said to have the highest density of cinema seats in relation to its population. Sophisticated cinema culture is definitely a high priority here. The people of Freiburg love cinema: whether blockbusters in the CinemaxX multiplex cinema with oversized screens and sophisticated image and sound technology or small and fine in one of the three independent cinemas - every evening can be a cinema evening here.

A special place for film culture is the Kommunale Kino in the old Wiehre railway station. On the programme: innovative contemporary films in their original version. Directors and authors regularly come here to discuss their work with the audience.

And because people in Freiburg not only appreciate screen dramas, but also warm summer evenings, the summer night cinema in the courtyard of the Black Monastery is a summer highlight for film fans. From the end of June to September, you can enjoy open-air classics, newcomers and big-screen treasures under the stars.

Excellent cinema

Award-winning: Freiburg's independent cinemas

A strong trio: with the Friedrichsbau, the Harmonie and the Kandelhof, three cinemas in Freiburg are dedicated to arthouse film art. Over 500 different films are shown here every year, and their commitment to independent film art has already earned the cinemas numerous awards. In 2007, the Friedrichsbau and Kandelhof were the first German cinemas ever to receive an award for the best programme in Europe. There is a strong focus on European film and, in addition to the classic cinema evening, there are always special formats such as premieres, specials, previews, foreign-language cinema evenings or theme weeks.
