Freiburg beer

Beer or wine? In Freiburg you can have both!

Do we even need beer alongside Baden wines? The answer was quite controversial around 1780: Back then, many Freiburg residents were even against the establishment of more brewmasters. Fortunately, they did not prevail; today, Freiburg has really good beer to offer alongside top wines. You can find out how well the two go together in the House of Baden Wines: with the "Wier", an aperitif of wine and beer.

Breweries in Freiburg

One of Freiburg's beer pioneers of the 18th century was the 24-year-old Ludwig Ganter, who founded the Ganter Brewery. One of his innovations: He bought Freiburg's first refrigeration machine to brew beer all year round. The brewery is still family-owned today and still delivers its draught beer to the Ganter restaurants in Freiburg's old town centre by horse and cart. Another traditional brewery also played a part in Freiburg's beer evolution: Julius Feierling offered the city's first light-coloured beer at his brewery, Hausbrauerei Feierling, founded in 1877. And for some years now, thecity's craft beer scene has been creating new pale ales, IPAs, stouts and more.

Beer gardens in Freiburg

Where is the best place to spend a balmy summer evening in Germany's sunniest city? In one of the many beer gardens in Freiburg! You can enjoy good beer, a relaxed atmosphere and warm rays of sunshine right through to autumn - you can even bring your own food and hire a barbecue at the Ganter Hausbiergarten. And from the chestnut garden at the Greiffenegg Schlössle on the Schlossberg (castle hill), you can enjoy a free beer and pretzel, tarte flambée or veal sausage breakfast with a fantastic view over the old town and the Rhine plain. In Freiburg's oldest beer garden, the Biergarten Hausbrauerei Feierling, you can sit under old chestnut trees; the snack menu includes Bibeleskäs, Brauerkäs and other Baden specialities.

Brewery collective
Freiburg and the surrounding area has an excellent range of beer shops, exciting craft beer events and, last but not least, a considerable number of craft brewers with a wide variety of styles. And there is also close contact with craft brewers in Colmar, Basel and Strasbourg - and several joint beers have already been created.

Craft Beer in Freiburg

Four beer enthusiasts from Bavaria and northern Germany, Australia and California have been brewing Freiburg to the top of the German craft beer scene for several years: their brewery collective Freiburg successfully focuses on strongly hopped beers - and on shared enjoyment. The brewing collective regularly organises craft beer events, often together with Decker Bier, a network of microbreweries in southern Baden. The lively scene and the proud number of eight craft beer breweries have earned Freiburg a reputation as the German craft beer capital. Further tips for beer fans: at Brauhaus Martin's Bräu at Martinstor ( Martin's Gate), the master brewer creates a new craft beer every month. And there are regular craft beer tastings at the Craftbeer Lodge or in the beer shop .

Beer tips in Freiburg

A day all about beer

The German craft beer capital of Freiburg has such exciting breweries, such charming beer gardens and, above all, such delicious beer that a whole day here can easily revolve around just that. And if you still need a nice souvenir to take home: In the market calendar , beer sommelier Jan Czerny gives his beer recommendation for a recipe every month. You can get the calendar at the beer shop, one of the stops on our day trip around beer:

  • In the morning: From the Münstermarkt (cathedral market) to the Schneckenvorstadt district
    FWTM Spiegelhalter
The Münstermarkt (cathedral market) is a good place to start: a Lange Rote, for example. The Alte Wache on the market square serves a "Wier" to start - an aperitif of wine and beer. Then it's off to the Schneckenvorstadt: on a beer tour, you get beer, snacks and exciting stories about the brewers, bathers and tanners who founded this neighbourhood in the Middle Ages.
  • FWTM Antal
Back at the Münstermarkt (cathedral market), the Haus zum Roten Eber serves regional beer specialities from the Ganter Brewery. And then take a digestive stroll through Oberlinden, Freiburg's oldest neighbourhood. Photo tip: One of the Rhine pebble mosaics shows a beer mug. At the Craftbeer Lodge and the beer shop you can get craft beer & co. Then it's off to Freiburg's oldest beer garden at the Feierling brewery. Speciality of the house: the "Inselhopf", a fresh, naturally cloudy full beer made from organic ingredients.

Now head along the Dreisam to the traditional Ganter Brewery: for a "Freiburger" in the beer garden or for an open tour, which is offered on Fridays at 6 or 7 pm. A hearty dinner is served at Martin's Bräu near Martinstor (Martin's Gate). It is accompanied by craft beer, for example, which the master brewer creates anew every month. Tip for a sundowner beer: the Kastaniengarten on Schlossberg (castle hill) is one of the most beautiful beer gardens in the region - with a view of the old town and the Rhine plain. There is live music here on many evenings.

A foray through Freiburg's beer scene

Spending a day exploring Freiburg's beer scene, from the young craft beer scene to traditional breweries such as the family-run Ganter brewery: That's what food blogger Christine Garcia Urbina did - and described on her blog trickytine. Her conclusion after a tour of the Ganter Brewery: "I'm particularly impressed by the melange of state-of-the-art brewing technology and the originally preserved area. Wow!"
