Excursion to the Schauinsland

No wonder the people of Freiburg love their local mountain: The Schauinsland can be easily reached by bus and tram from the centre of Freiburg in just 20 minutes. And then offers a unique landscape - and view! From the 1,248 metre-high summit, you can see the nearby Feldberg and the surrounding Upper Black Forest, and on clear days even as far as the Alps. By the way: as the summit of the Schauinsland is still within the city limits, Freiburg is considered the highest city in Germany.

Bereits seit 1930 gibt’s die Schauinslandbahn als entspannte Alternative zum Aufstieg auf den Schauinsland. Auf 3.600 Metern Länge überwindet sie ab der Talstation hinter Günterstal einen Höhenunterschied von 746 Metern – und das in nur 20 Minuten. Bei ihrer Eröffnung war sie übrigens eine echte technische Sensation: als erste Personenseilbahn der Welt nach dem Umlaufprinzip! Bis 2013 wurde sie umfangreich modernisiert und ist seitdem auch für mobilitätseingeschränkte Besucher*innen komfortabler zu nutzen.

Your way up the Schauinsland

To the summit

Let's get up to the 1,248 metre high summit - but how? Take the Schauinsland cable car, for example, which takes you from the valley station behind Günterstal to the summit in 20 minutes. Or take the sporty route on foot or by bike; there are plenty of routes for hiking, climbing, mountain biking or road cycling.

Schauinsland mining museum

Not far from the summit, you have the opportunity to not only go up the mountain - but also deep down into it. The Schauinsland was used as a mine for silver, lead and zinc for 800 years; today it is home to the largest mining museum in the region. During the guided tours, you will discover part of the 100 kilometres of mines and a piece of Freiburg's history: silver mining brought great prosperity to the city in the Middle Ages.

Discover the Schauinsland

If you fancy a new experience, try Europe's longest downhill scooter route: you can whizz eight kilometres from the Schauinsland mountain station back down to the valley in around an hour - on a high-tech scooter that you can hire on site. Or you can take a slow, detailed look at the mountain landscape, for example on a guided flower and herb tour. The narrow paths take you across pastures and alpine meadows, with arnica, bloodroot, St John's wort and many other rare flowers and herbs to discover along the way. Things get really mysterious on the Mystery Walk, a kind of live escape room where you have to solve tricky tasks as a team - and get to know Schauinsland from a completely different angle.
