The Schauinsland, Freiburg's local mountain (1,284 m), offers spectacular panoramic views over Freiburg, the Kaiserstuhl, the Vosges and the Alps. With Germany's longest cable car, hiking trails, mountain bike routes and winter sports facilities, it is a versatile excursion destination.
The Schauinsland is a popular excursion destination south-east of Freiburg, known for its exceptional views. The Schauinsland cable car, 3.6 km long, overcomes a height difference of 746 m - currently powered by 100% eco-friendly green electricity. Circular trails lead from the mountain - including a 700 m long path to the 31 m high Eugen Keidel Tower, known as the Schauinsland Tower - through natural pastures and to wooden sculptures. Along the way, the Erzkastenrundweg museum and historic mining sites offer insights into 700 years of silver mining. Activities such as hiking, mountain biking, climbing, hang-gliding, scootering, paragliding and, in winter, skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing make the mountain attractive all year round. Accessibility on foot, by car, bike, bus or cable car makes it a versatile outdoor destination.
