The Holzschlägermatte is a traditional mountain restaurant on Freiburg’s Schauinsland at an elevation of about 950 meters. The restaurant combines Black Forest hospitality with regional cuisine and an impressive view over the Rhine Valley all the way to the Vosges Mountains. The spacious sun terrace, in particular, invites guests to enjoy the scenery in a relaxed atmosphere. The kitchen focuses on fresh, regional products sourced as locally as possible. The menu features Baden-style and home-style dishes, complemented by regional beers, local wines, and organic ice cream from the Black Forest. Sustainability and collaboration with local businesses are integral parts of the restaurant’s concept.
The Holzschlägermatte is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists, families, motorcyclists, and day-trippers. From the Schauinslandbahn mountain station, the restaurant can be reached in about 35 minutes via a scenic hike. It is also accessible directly by car.
