What makes Freiburg's museums special

Ecclesiastical art, natural history, archaeology, contemporary art - all of these have a firm place in Freiburg's museum landscape. What is special is how each individual museum helps you to discover the city as a whole.
The best example: you will experience Freiburg Minster differently if you have also seen the Augustian museum.
In the artfully remodelled former monastery church on Augustinerplatz, you can get impressively close to the mighty original sandstone sculptures from the Minster and even look the fearsome gargoyles straight in the face from the gallery. What's more, Freiburg's museum landscape doesn't skimp on heavy topics.
The National Socialism Documentation Centre, which opened in 2025, is attached to the Augustian museum. On three floors, the centre commemorates persecution, resistance and the victims of the Nazi era in Freiburg.

Our visitors are completely impressed every time they enter the sculpture hall. The fantastic space of the former hall church of the Augustinian Hermits with the monumental figures of prophets from Freiburg Minster conveys a feeling of art, silence and grandeur.

Extensive refurbishment, new themed areas and a new café

New exhibition rooms in the Augustian museum

The opening of the new exhibition rooms in the former convent building at the end of February 2026 marks the completion of the long-term renovation of the Augustian museum in Freiburg. Covering 2,900 square metres, the museum now presents itself as a modern, barrier-free and interactive place for art, history and social dialogue in Freiburg. The popular café in the Zinnengarten has also been reopened.

Whether in the atmospheric treasure chamber with medieval treasures, in the "Protest and Revolution" themed area with impressive floor graffiti or in the Welte Lounge with music "at the touch of a button" - here you will encounter fascinating objects and moving stories from Freiburg and the region. Multimedia installations on the Black Forest, interactive stations on the city's history, a baroque gallery in a dense salon setting and digital portrait steles on the diversity of urban society make the tour varied and surprising.

The Augustian museum is therefore more than just an exhibition venue - it is an inspiring meeting place in the centre of the city.
