Freiburg goes swimming!

Desire for water

Just dive in? It's wonderful in Freiburg! Whether you want to swim your lengths in peace and quiet, soak up the sun with family and friends on the lakeshore or enjoy the cosy warm thermal water: Freiburg not only has a large selection of pools and bathing lakes, but also a particularly beautiful one. A real gem is located in the Wiehre district: the Lorettobad (swimming pool) is an Art Nouveau gem: It is home to Germany's only outdoor pool for women only.

Swimming in style at the Lorettobad (swimming pool)

It is the oldest outdoor pool in Freiburg - and for many the most beautiful: the Lorettobad (swimming pool), aka "Lollo" as the locals call it, has been around since 1841. In the beginning, only men were allowed to swim in this Art Nouveau gem, but today it offers women a special service: away from the family pool, they have their own ladies' pool here - the only one of its kind in Germany.

Holiday feelings at Freiburg's bathing lakes

On the board and in the water

Swimming, SUP and sunbathing

There are those summer days that are perfect for a trip to the lake. Some stay on the shore: swimming, sunbathing, reading or simply closing their eyes and feeling the summer. Others are drawn to the water: hop on a SUP board, dip the paddle in and savour the moment as you glide forwards. There's a very special favourite spot just outside Freiburg: the idyllic Windgfällweiher pond, around 50 minutes' drive south-east of the city, provides the perfect backdrop for stand-up paddling: clear water, no boats and an unobstructed view of the Upper Black Forest all around. Boards are easily available directly from the lido at the Aloha Centre Freiburg. There are also courses on offer - even for yoga on the board. If you like, you can also pick up your SUP board from the hire station directly in Freiburg and then paddle off on Lake Opfingen, which is close to the city centre.

Lake Opfingen

The "large" and "small" Opfinger Baggersee lakes are located in the Mooswald forest, to the right and left of the road to Freiburg. The small Opfinger lake is a little more tranquil than the large one: large sunbathing lawns, many small lakeside spots along the circular path, barbecue areas, beach volleyball court, slackline facilities and a kiosk invite you to linger. Although car parking is available, we recommend travelling by bike or bus (lines 32 or 33, Opfingen-Kleingärten stop).

The Tunisee is best reached by car: simply follow the "Badeseen" signs from the Seestraße.

Lake Moosweiher

The tranquil Moosweiher lake is located in Freiburg Lehen. Although it tends to be quieter there, there are still numerous leisure activities on offer. From a playground to a giant half-pipe, football and beach volleyball facilities and a mini golf course - there is something for everyone. The pizzeria "Persio am See" offers delicious Italian cuisine for a snack in between. We recommend travelling by tram line 1 (Moosweiher terminus).

Dietenbachsee

The Dietenbachsee is located in Freiburg Weingarten, not far from the city centre. Surrounded by a spacious park, you can not only swim in this pretty little lake, but also take a wonderful walk or go inline skating or cycling on the tarmac paths around the lake. We recommend travelling here on tram line 3 (Bugginger Straße stop).

From spa to sport

Thermal baths & indoor pools in Freiburg

Freiburg is always setting sunshine records, but sometimes the weather here is not compatible with outdoor pools. Luckily, there are a whole range of attractive indoor alternatives in the city. If you fancy a sauna and spa, you will find several thermal baths for your own personal wellness programme. And if you need a place to work out in winter, you can work on your best time on the 50-metre track in the Westbad.
