Enjoy Freiburg's surrounding countryside

From ostrich taverns to Michelin-starred cuisine

It's not just the forests of the Black Forest that characterise the landscape around Freiburg - you'll also find vineyards, orchards and asparagus fields around the Tuniberg. A unique combination that makes Freiburg a real culinary hotspot. Here you can enjoy the whole range of culinary delights, from exquisite Michelin-starred cuisine to lovingly prepared Baden classics. Incidentally, you have a particularly wide range of options in spring and autumn: this is when the wineries open their popular 'Straußis' and serve their wines, accompanied by regional dishes. Charming plus: the Straußis are usually strategically located on particularly beautiful hiking routes!

Break in the Straußi

The decorated bouquet or broom on the roadside shows: A broom and ostrich restaurant has just opened at this winery! In spring and autumn, the lovingly named "Straußi" inns serve simple and typical Baden dishes such as Bibbeliskäs (curd cheese with chives), Brägeli (fried potatoes with bacon and onions), sausage salad or onion and tarte flambée - usually in generous portions. The dishes are accompanied by the restaurant's own wine, fruit brandy and cider. And the typical Baden conviviality.

Inns in the Freiburg region

From home-style cooking to haute cuisine - there are many different ways to enjoy a meal in the Black Forest. In some restaurants, you can taste the influence of nearby French or Swiss cuisine, while elsewhere you can savour hearty Swabian classics. It is precisely this variety that makes the culinary appeal of Freiburg's surrounding area so special. In addition to Black Forest ham and Black Forest gateau, you should definitely try the local classics: the Bibbeleskäs spread and Brägele, aka fried potatoes.
