Starting at the Schwabentor (Swabian Gate) in the Old Town, this 4.6-kilometre stroll takes you along Freiburg’s river: the Dreisam. Along the way, you’ll find stunning views, sunbathing lawns and plenty of places to take a break – on a bench, on the grass or on the rocks in the water.

The Black Forest begins just a stone’s throw from the old town – on Freiburg’s Schlossberg Hill, the all-rounder among Freiburg’s natural attractions. Whether you want to go hiking, take a leisurely stroll or delve into Freiburg’s history, there’s a tour to suit every taste.

Pure romance

The sky turns red, and the sun’s rays make the cathedral tower glow: sun-drenched Freiburg boasts a whole host of perfect sunset spots. A classic: Cannon Square on Schlossberg Hill, with a stunning view of the city. For those who prefer something a little quieter but just as romantic: the Wasserschlössle (water castle) in the Wiehre district isn’t actually a real castle, but a water reservoir with an elegant façade – yet it’s a fairytale-like spot to fall in love with Freiburg at sunset.
