This tour takes you on a journey through the history of the Schlossberg (castle hill) along the former fortifications: from the Lower Castle grounds to the Schlossbergturm (castle hill tower) and the Upper Castle.
The tour begins in the Stadtgarten (1) and first leads up the serpentines to the Schlossberg restaurant Dattler (2). From there, the trail continues along the forest path to the Kommandantengarten (3), around which the only grazed open spaces on the Schlossberg (castle hill) are located. After a final, short ascent, you reach the grounds of the "Oberes Schloss". There the path leads past the Peterskreuz (4), the site of the former fortress chapel, and the Fort Carré (5), the former seat of the fortress commander. The trail descends through the so-called "Communication" (6), a brick connecting path between the upper and lower castle, to the Schlossbergturm (castle hill tower) (7), whose ascent is rewarded with a 360° view of Freiburg and the Black Forest. Via the so-called "Salzbüchsle staircase" you reach the Small Cannon Square (8), where there is a ball track for children. Finally, you reach the much better known (large) Cannon Square (9) and the Ludwigshöhe above it, which also offers fantastic views of Freiburg. The route ends at the Schlossbergrestaurant Dattler and heads back down towards the Stadtgarten.
