Freiburg's young old town

Exploring the alleyways of the old town

How does Freiburg's old town centre manage to stay so young despite being over 900 years old? This can be explained, for example, by the Bächle , the watercourses that have become a landmark criss-crossing the streets of the old town. They were probably created when the town was founded in 1120, initially for purely practical reasons: for example, the streams were used to bring water for use and fire-fighting into the town. Today, many of the 25,000 or so students in the university city dangle their feet here on warm summer days; children pull their wooden Bächle boats across the water and visitors appreciate the pleasant microclimate here in the sunniest city in the country.

A creative reutilisation that is typical of Freiburg's old town. The city centre is bursting with historic houses: Its cathedral inspires art historians all over the world and even Germany's oldest inn, " Zum Roten Bären", can be found here. But that doesn't mean the old town is old. In Freiburg, historic alleyways such as the street "Konviktstraße" are becoming social media stars, pop-up shops are moving into medieval shops and the Münstermarkt (cathedral market ) - typical of this Green City! - there has long been a vegan version in addition to the traditional sausage.

All this is waiting to be discovered in the winding alleyways and along the charming little streams. And according to urban legend, anyone who accidentally steps into a Freiburg gutter while wandering through the old town will marry a Freiburg native...

Building of superlatives

Freiburg Minster

Visit Freiburg without seeing the cathedral? Impossible! Freiburg's top attraction is visible from afar: at 116 metres, the west tower of the cathedral towers above all other buildings in the city and that is not the only superlative this cathedral can boast. In 1869, an art historian described the west tower as the "most beautiful tower on earth".

When construction of the cathedral began around 1200, the Münsterbauhütte (cathedral workshop) was founded specifically for this purpose. To this day, it is one of the most traditional stonemasonry businesses in Germany and is responsible for the maintenance of Freiburg Minster.

But it's not just the cathedral itself that has been designed with great attention to detail over the centuries - such as the magnificent windows, which were donated by various guilds in the Middle Ages.

Gut decisions: The weekly market around the cathedral

Münstermarkt (cathedral market)

Some call it 'the heart of the city'; others prefer 'Freiburg's belly' and both are true: Traders set up their stalls around the cathedral six days a week. The red-clad market masters keep the colourful hustle and bustle in order.
The crowds are particularly large on Saturdays - after all, the people of Freiburg come to the Münstermarkt for many reasons: they do their weekly shopping at the farmers' market on the north side of the cathedral, the craft market on the south side sells ceramics and the like, and there are beautiful flowers around the cathedral portal. Above all, however, people meet at the Münstermarkt (cathedral market) to enjoy a glass of wine or a Lange Rote: the traditional cathedral sausage, which is eaten in a fresh roll with fried onions, mustard and ketchup. Of course, Green City Freiburg also serves a "Lange Grüne" made from tofu. And for those who prefer something sweet, there is Stefan Linder ' s stand with Stefan's cheesecake, supposedly the best cheesecake in the world.

Freiburg's rich heritage

Historical merchants' hall

Few buildings demonstrate the rich history of Freiburg's old town as beautifully as the historical merchants' hall with its striking red façade and the two lovingly - and colourfully! - oriel windows. When it was built in 1520 directly on the central Münsterplatz, Fribourg was experiencing an economic boom under the Habsburgs. So it's no wonder that the façade has been adorned with statues of four different Habsburg rulers ever since. For a long time, passing merchants stored and cleared their goods here or sold them in the arcaded vestibule.
Today, the various halls, the historic parlour and the inner courtyard are often used for events and can also be rented privately.

Where every season is a pleasure

House of Baden Wines - Alte Wache

What a development! Built in 1733, the yellow building on Münsterplatz once served as a garrison for the Austrian guard organisation - Freiburg belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire for almost 500 years and was even the seat of government at times.

However, there have been no military exercises here for a long time: the listed Alte Wache is now a popular meeting place for Freiburg residents and visitors alike to enjoy a 'Viertele'. Here, in the House of Baden Wines, you can choose from over 200 regional wines. In addition to typical Baden wines such as Pinot Gris, Chasselas and Müller-Thurgau, there are also two special drinks: In summer, people like to order a 'cold Sophie', an iced red or white wine. In the cold season, there is also a mulled wine variant, the 'Winter Marie'.

The pure Freiburg dose

Konviktstraße

It is the picture-book version of a Freiburg old town street: "Konviktstraße" was laid out in the 11th century as a street for craftsmen. It was spared from the bombs of the Second World War and was so lovingly restored that Freiburg received an award from the state for exemplary old town redevelopment.

Today, the medieval houses are home to owner-managed shops and traditional crafts, as well as some of the city's nicest little cafés, bars and rustic pubs. The "Konviktstraße" street is considered by many to be Freiburg's most beautiful alleyway all year round. When the blue rain blooms like a garland over the Altstadtgässle in early summer or the people of Freiburg dangle their feet in the Bächle on warm days, the "Konviktstraße" becomes a social media star.

Stories from the underground

Inn "Zum Roten Bären

In the centre of the city and yet completely quiet and very comfortable, guests sleep in this guesthouse - incidentally the oldest in Germany. The menu in the restaurant is small and seasonal, accompanied by selected Baden wines and a lovingly arranged breakfast buffet for hotel guests.

Historically, the Gasthaus "Zum Roten Bären" is also one of the first houses in Freiburg's historic city centre. The foundations of the building date back to 1120, when the town was founded; it is the oldest inn in Germany. And so the house also has a Freiburg speciality: a deep cellar. Soon after it was founded, the old town was filled with up to three metres of gravel to increase the gradient and send water through the now iconic Freiburg gutters. Ground floors were then quickly converted into cellars and cellars into deep cellars.
