Freemasons in Freiburg - City tour
Since 1784, numerous Freemasons from Freiburg—whose work often remained hidden—have had a significant impact on the city’s history. Their influence extends to the present day and is visible in surprising places throughout the city. One example: Originally, it was not Berthold Schwarz but the Freemason and statesman Rotteck who was commemorated on Rathausplatz. The ornate carillon on the new town hall also traces its origins to the Freemason Welte brothers, whose work can still be heard there today. As part of an exclusive city tour, five notable stops will explore these fascinating figures and the traces they left behind in Freiburg. The tour leads from Rathausplatz along Rathausgasse to Rotteckplatz, then on to the old synagogue square, to Martinstor (Martin's Gate), to Augustinerplatz, and finally back via Münsterplatz. Discover a city history that hides more than meets the eye.
