Whether it's slow fashion, upcycling, gourmet manufactories or vintage bargains at the city's flea markets - Freiburg makes it easy for you to keep a clear conscience when you go shopping. Thanks to the 25,000 students in the city, there is plenty of room for new ideas and exciting concept stores, where the ecological footprint is naturally taken into account from the very beginning. These are often small boutiques and shops where you, as a customer, naturally strike up a conversation with the people behind the counter. Green City Freiburg is particularly strong in the area of sustainable fashion: many shops that are now known throughout Germany, such as Zündstoff or Blickfang, have their roots in Freiburg - and shops where you can browse and try things on at your leisure.
It is small, manoeuvrable, colourful and a bestseller with locals and guests alike: the Freiburg gutters boat. For young Freiburg fans in particular, keeping the boat on course in the city's canals is a year-round highlight. However, the little boat also glides quietly along on other waters and spreads a nice portion of Freiburg feeling at home. The Bächle boats are available from the Reha shop and at its stand near the Münstermarkt (cathedral market). By the way: If you prefer to sit comfortably by the Bächle, you should get the Bächle cushion from the tourist information centre. There are also many other regional culinary specialities on offer - perfect for a Bächle picnic. And if you're looking for a souvenir with weight: the cathedral shop sells original stones from the world-famous Freiburg Cathedral.
Regional, seasonal and organic - this has long been a matter of course for many Freiburg producers. When it comes to indulgence, people here look further afield. Fair production methods, minimal packaging and as many natural flavours as possible - the city's producers combine all of this to create food that not only tastes good, but is also good for you. At FrohNat, you can enjoy tempting cakes as unbaked "raw cakes" without refined sugar; farm shops offer bread, eggs, meat and cheese from their own production, and not just outside the city, but also in the middle of the popular Stühlinger neighbourhood with the Flotten Schalotte. Why does this work so well in Freiburg? Well, after all, the city has a hotspot for connoisseurs right in its heart with the Münstermarkt (cathedral market). If you let yourself drift between the stalls there, you will quickly get a feeling for how well indulgence and an ecological conscience go together in Freiburg.
