Münstermarkt (cathedral market)
Up to 130 market stalls bring their wares and lots of colorful hustle and bustle to the square around Freiburg Minster from Monday to Saturday.
On the north side of the square, producers from the region sell vegetables, cheese, meat and bread; on the south side, there are ceramics, brushes, hats etc. Charming transition between these two market areas: The flower and plant traders have their stalls by the main Münster portal.
On Saturdays in particular, the Münstermarkt (cathedral market) is an important place to shop, enjoy and have a quick chat - popular with both Freiburg residents and tourists. On the north side, long queues often form at lunchtime to get hold of a Lange Rote, the typical Freiburg cathedral sausage - or a slice of Stefan's cheesecake at the fish fountain. On many Saturdays, there is also a short matinée with organ music at market time from 11.30 am.
As typical as the Münstermarkt (cathedral market) is for Freiburg today, traders have only been setting up their stalls here on the square since the cemetery was moved around the cathedral in the 16th century. Previously, the weekly market was held in what is now Kaiser-Joseph-Straße.
