Enjoy the summer with culture, picnics & music

In summer, this city has a very special flair: discover the typical Freiburg feeling at a picnic by the iconic Bächle, with a glass of Baden wine in your hand or in the museum - these are the most important summer events in the city:

  • From May: Bächle picnic
    Bächlepicknikc Freiburg
    Freiburg erLEBEN
A special experience at the Bächle

The most beautiful picnic in town

Put your feet in the refreshing water and enjoy a few tasty treats - the popular Bächle picnic is complete. Of course, you can organise this yourself at any time, but you can also book it on selected dates through the provider Freiburg erLEBEN. They will arrange a box full of local specialities for you - vegetarian options available on request - which you can pick up at the Museum Educational Workshop on the Gerberau, next to the Feierling beer garden. Turned upside down and placed over the stream, the crate then becomes a comfortable picnic table.

Wine, sparkling wine and Baden specialities

A gourmet festival with a view of the cathedral

For six days in July, you can get to know the wine-growing regions of Baden in a very special way: at the wine festival around Freiburg Minster, you can stroll past the stands with a glass in your hand, which are set up by winegrowers from the Markgräflerland, Breisgau, Kaiserstuhl and other important growing areas in the region. You can sample over 400 wines and sparkling wines here - as well as regional delicacies from cheese spaetzle to tarte flambée and Black Forest gateau.

The cultural highlight of the summer

Explore ten different cultural locations with one ticket: On Freiburg Museum Night, the five municipal museums and five other institutions open their doors late into the night. There is also an accompanying programme that allows you to get to know the museums from a completely different perspective - for example, when pop songs suddenly start playing on the Welte organ in the Augustian museum or the dance floor opens in the Münsterbauhütte (cathedral workshop). Various guided tours and hands-on activities are on offer, and there's good food and drinks everywhere.

From rock to jazz to classical music

    Music on a greenfield site

From mid-July, this festival offers a packed programme of music for three weeks: Rock and pop, jazz and blues, classical music, as well as dance and variety will take to the stages. And what stages! Several tents - from the imposing circus tent to the open mound tent - are set up for the festival seven kilometres outside the city, on the green meadow of the Mundenhof animal enclosure. Starting out as a small pop-up event in 1983, the Tent Music Festival has established itself as Freiburg's most important music event over more than four decades.

Where fashion & pleasure have a stage

A catwalk for illustrious fashion shows will be set up on Münsterplatz, live music and performances await you in Rathausgasse and a colourful circus programme for the whole family awaits you at the Kartoffelmarkt: at the Fashion & Food Festival, Freiburg city centre will provide a large and colourful stage for fashion and indulgence for three days. In the shops and boutiques, especially on Augustinerplatz and in the Schneckenvorstadt district, there will be lots of activities as well as plenty of food stalls and special gastronomic offers.

September: La Reine

Road bike marathon for women

Participants in this marathon, which is exclusively open to women, feel like la reine herself, i.e. a queen. Starting in Freiburg city centre, the route covers either 100 or 170 kilometres through the Markgräflerland and Kaiserstuhl wine regions, finishing at the Schlossberg (castle hill) in the Kastaniengarten; regional specialities and drinks are offered at gourmet stations along the way. So that these can be savoured in peace and quiet, the time is not taken from start to finish, but on individual sections of the route.

For three days, you can taste your way through more than 300 exhibitors at the Plaza Culinaria at Messe Freiburg, ranging from beer and wine to chocolate, tea and coffee, Black Forest specialities and vegan products. November & December: Christmas market

Light and treats for the Advent season

It all kicks off on the Monday before the first Advent: until the day before Christmas Eve, over 120 stalls at seven locations in Freiburg's Old Town offer their wares - handicrafts and culinary delights, mulled wine and gift ideas. The Freiburg Christmas market, which was first held in 1973, has now spread to Rathausplatz and Kartoffelmarkt, Unterlindenplatz, Franziskanerstrasse, Turmstrasse and Rotteckring. There are now highlights for all generations: Children enjoy baking their own biscuits in the Christmas bakery at the potato market, while others are drawn to the impressively illuminated Colombischlössle. And for those looking for a moment of peace and quiet in between: An Advent meditation is offered every day at 5.30 pm from 1 December in St. Martin's Church on Rathausplatz.

Tobias Friedrich Mundologia
January: Mundologia Festival

Around the world in exciting lectures

Mundologia is the Spanish word for world knowledge - and this is exactly what Freiburg photojournalist Tobias Hauser and underwater photographer David Hettich want to convey with their festival of the same name.
Since 2004, it has developed into the largest lecture festival in the world; photographers and journalists, mountaineers and world travellers report on their adventures for four days in front of a good 20,000 visitors. Parallel to the lectures, there is a travelling and photography fair on three floors of the Konzerthaus (concert hall) in Freiburg.

April: My Freiburg Marathon

Running with music - and a Maultaschen party!

How do athletes in Freiburg top up their carbohydrate reserves before and after the marathon? Of course: with a Maultaschen party. This is included in the entry fee for the Mein Marathon, which over 12,300 runners take part in every year in April, starting at Messe Freiburg. If you want to run a shorter distance, you can also register for the 10-kilometre run or half marathon. And another charming and typical Freiburg extra: the sports event is also a music highlight: several bands and DJs heat up the runners along the way.
