10 events in Freiburg that you should definitely not miss

Tobias Friedrich Mundologia
Around the world in exciting lectures

January: Mundologia Festival

Mundologia is the Spanish word for world knowledge - and this is exactly what Freiburg photojournalist Tobias Hauser and underwater photographer David Hettich want to convey with their festival of the same name.
Since 2004, it has developed into the largest lecture festival in the world; photographers and journalists, mountaineers and world travellers report on their adventures for four days in front of a good 20,000 visitors. Parallel to the lectures, there is a travelling and photography fair on three floors of the Konzerthaus (concert hall) in Freiburg.

February: Freiburg Fasnet

When Freiburg's Fasnet (carnival) bathes the city in a sea of foolish colour, an exuberant atmosphere is guaranteed. The fifth season begins with the traditional opening on 11 November, but the big highlight follows from Schmutzige Dunschtig (Thursday) to Fasnetmendig (Monday). During this time, street carnival, jingling bells, dancing witches and rousing Guggenmusik create a state of emergency in the city. A special highlight is the Fasnetsmendig parade, which transforms Freiburg into one big stage. Experience tradition, joie de vivre and genuine Freiburg customs - loud, colourful and full of emotion.

Running with music - and a Maultaschen party!

April: My Freiburg Marathon

How do athletes in Freiburg top up their carbohydrate reserves before and after the marathon? Of course: with a Maultaschen party. This is included in the entry fee for the Mein Marathon, which over 12,300 runners take part in every year in April, starting at Messe Freiburg. If you want to run a shorter distance, you can also register for the 10-kilometre run or half marathon. And another charming and typical Freiburg extra: the sports event is also a music highlight: several bands and DJs heat up the runners along the way.

Road bike marathon for women

September: La Reine

Participants in this marathon, which is exclusively open to women, feel like la reine herself, i.e. a queen. Starting in Freiburg city centre, the route covers either 100 or 170 kilometres through the Markgräflerland and Kaiserstuhl wine regions, finishing at the Schlossberg (castle hill) in the Kastaniengarten; regional specialities and drinks are offered at gourmet stations along the way. So that these can be savoured in peace and quiet, the time is not taken from start to finish, but on individual sections of the route.

Light and treats for the Advent season

November & December: Christmas market

It all kicks off on the Monday before the first Advent: until the day before Christmas Eve, over 120 stalls at seven locations in Freiburg's Old Town offer their wares - handicrafts and culinary delights, mulled wine and gift ideas. The Freiburg Christmas market, which was first held in 1973, has now spread to Rathausplatz and Kartoffelmarkt, Unterlindenplatz, Franziskanerstrasse, Turmstrasse and Rotteckring. There are now highlights for all generations: Children enjoy baking their own biscuits in the Christmas bakery at the potato market, while others are drawn to the impressively illuminated Colombischlössle. And for those looking for a moment of peace and quiet in between: An Advent meditation is offered every day at 5.30 pm from 1 December in St. Martin's Church on Rathausplatz.
