Freiburg Fasnet

When carnival awakens in Freiburg, the city is transformed into a colourful sea of colour, music and tradition. Witches whirl through the alleyways, bell-covered hats clink to the beat and Guggenmusik fills the air with rousing energy. Everywhere people laugh, children dance and visitors mingle in the merry hustle and bustle. Freiburg Fasnet is a festival for all the senses - loud, lively and full of history.

The heart and soul of Fasnet

The guilds

Behind the colourful hustle and bustle are the Freiburg guilds, traditional associations from the various districts of the city that keep the fifth season alive with their unique costumes, figures and customs. Whether witches, sailors, fire jesters or the iconic Bächleputzer, each guild tells its own story and shapes the foolish festival with character and passion. Together they form the Breisgauer Narrenzunft, an umbrella organisation that unites over 30 guilds and carries traditional customs through the streets of Freiburg with heart, humour and an unforgettable atmosphere.

Gugge music

Gugge music is a special form of brass band music that has its origins in the Alemannic carnival. It is played by so-called Guggenmusiken with trumpets, trombones, tubas and powerful percussion - deliberately loud, rhythmic and with a rough, unmistakable sound. In Freiburg, it fills the streets and squares with energy during carnival: the music drives parades forward, brings people together and creates that exuberant atmosphere that immediately sweeps visitors away. Gugge music is therefore not just a musical style, but a central experience of the Freiburg Fasnet.

The events

The highlight of the Freiburg carnival

During Fasnet, Freiburg becomes a big open-air stage. The carnival kicks off on Schmutzige Dunschdig, when the fools take over early in the morning, parade through the city and celebrate the start of the hot phase with music, hats and good humour. In the days that follow, street carnival dominates the scene: alleyways and squares are filled with witches, guilds and Guggenmusik bands, spontaneous performances alternate with a fixed programme, and there is laughter, dancing and partying everywhere. The highlight is the Fasnetmendig parade, during which Freiburg is transformed into a colourful, resounding and pulsating overall experience. This mixture of tradition, openness and joie de vivre is what makes Freiburg Fasnet so unique and just as captivating for visitors as it is for locals.

Carnival museum in the carnival guildhall

Experience the colourful world of Freiburg's carnival at the carnival museum in the carnival guild house! In the historic "Haus zum Grünen Jaspis" from the 16th century, the Breisgau Fools' Guild presents the diversity of the Swabian-Alemannic carnival. Here you can discover the 34 guilds, marvel at their skilfully crafted costumes and hand-carved wooden masks (larvae) - complemented by typical paraphernalia such as scissors, bell rods and pig's bladders. The exhibition tells the stories behind the figures and customs and lets you feel the living tradition of this unique culture. And if you listen carefully, you can literally hear the cheerful jester's call "Narri - narro!".
