Gugge music is a special form of brass band music that has its origins in the Alemannic carnival. It is played by so-called Guggenmusiken with trumpets, trombones, tubas and powerful percussion - deliberately loud, rhythmic and with a rough, unmistakable sound. In the days that follow, street carnival dominates the scene: alleyways and squares are filled with witches, guilds and Guggenmusik bands, spontaneous performances alternate with a fixed programme, and there is laughter, dancing and partying everywhere. The highlight is the Fasnetmendig parade, during which Freiburg is transformed into a colourful, resounding and pulsating overall experience.
