Freiburg Fasnet

When carnival awakens in Freiburg, the city is transformed into a colourful sea of colour, music and tradition. Witches whirl through the alleyways, bell-covered hats clink to the beat and Guggenmusik fills the air with rousing energy. During Fasnet, Freiburg becomes a big open-air stage. The carnival kicks off on Schmutzige Dunschdig, when the fools take over early in the morning, parade through the city and celebrate the start of the hot phase with music, hats and good humour. In the days that follow, street carnival dominates the scene: alleyways and squares are filled with witches, guilds and Guggenmusik bands, spontaneous performances alternate with a fixed programme, and there is laughter, dancing and partying everywhere. The highlight is the Fasnetmendig parade, during which Freiburg is transformed into a colourful, resounding and pulsating overall experience.
