Freiburg's region of pleasure: Kaiserstuhl & Tuniberg

Wine and hiking

Freiburg owes a good portion of dolce vita to these two mountains, which lie to the north-west of the city between the Black Forest and the Vosges mountains: the Kaiserstuhl, which is a good 556 metres high, and the Tuniberg, which is 312 metres high. Here, in Germany's sunniest region of all, special Burgundy wines, fruit varieties and asparagus thrive. You can enjoy all of this on the spot at wine festivals and in the wine taverns or restaurants. And on hiking trails such as the award-winning Kaiserstuhl Trail or cycle routes such as the Baden Wine Cycle Path, you can also experience a unique cultural landscape of vineyards, winegrowing villages and panoramic views.

History, landscape & arrival

Excursion to the Kaiserstuhl

A trip to the Kaiserstuhl is like travelling to another world - even if you can easily reach it from Freiburg by S-Bahn. This low mountain range, up to 556 metres high, began as a volcano millions of years ago; today, excellent white, grey or Pinot Noir vines and rare plants grow on the mineral-rich soil. The variety of orchids in particular is one of the greatest in Europe. A whole dozen mountains belong to the Kaiserstuhl, which incidentally does not owe its name to the imperial weather - the region is one of the warmest and sunniest in the country. It was probably named after the later Emperor Otto III, who held a day of judgement here in 994. A particularly beautiful way to discover the Kaiserstuhl: on foot!

Hiking & cycling on the Tuniberg

It is considered the "little brother" of the Kaiserstuhl - and yet it is very different: the Tuniberg, which is around 312 metres high, is not of volcanic origin like the Kaiserstuhl. However, the limestone soils of the Tuniberg are also an excellent terroir for Burgundy wines, which are mainly grown here in the "Burgundy oasis". The 14-kilometre Burgundy Trail is a particularly beautiful way to explore this landscape just outside Freiburg. And if you take the 10-kilometre Tuniberg-Höhenweg trail - on foot or by bike - you will be rewarded with unique views of the Black Forest, the Vosges mountains and the "big brother" Kaiserstuhl.
