Freiburger Bächle (Freiburg gutters)
The clear water of the Dreisam flows through the countless alleyways of Freiburg's old town in the Bächle.
It's not just children who are tempted to splash around in the cool water - young and old alike can let their feet and souls dangle here.
The shallow paved channels were created in the 12th century, when the town was founded, to supply people with drinking, service and fire-fighting water.
Today, they bring a very special nonchalance and relaxed atmosphere to the city: you can't get more chill factor than that. Incidentally, Freiburg gutters are also the venue for the unique Bächleboot race, the setting for bloody crime novels - and an insidious trap for singles. Because, as the saying goes, if you accidentally 'dappt' into the Freiburg gutters, you have to marry a Freiburg man or woman.
