Route description

From the Konzerthaus (concert hall), you cross the Wiwili bridge onto Wentzingerstraße, directly into the scene. The view is drawn directly to the turquoise twin towers of the Sacred Heart Church and the circular bike station. Freiburg's cultural and mobility hub combines - among other things - a bicycle parking garage and rental as well as the Hermann - a café, restaurant and bar with a wonderful roof terrace.

On the corner of Wentzingerstrasse and Wannerstrasse, Café Huber is the next recommendation. But first keep going, because there are some interesting addresses to discover along "Klarastraße" before turning left at the Babeuf cultural pub onto Egonstraße towards Lederle square, where an old pump factory used to stand.

At Lederle square, it's worth taking a look at Cafe Mirabeau - or turn left into Guntramstraße, browse through the second-hand shop S'Einlädele and follow the smell of fine cakes into Café Satz. The atmosphere here is more relaxed, with different music being played at Café Brasil on the corner of Wannerstrasse and Eschholzstrasse. Last opportunity for a break before heading out onto the green meadow!

After crossing Eschholzstraße, the path leads straight ahead along Wannerstraße - parallel to the streetcar line - for a good stretch and quickly calms down again. The futuristic town hall in Stühlinger can be seen from a distance and sets new standards, and not just architecturally. A design that deserves attention before heading to Eschholz park to catch your breath.

The Eschholz park relaxes the eye; on warm days, it awakens a spontaneous desire for a picnic and a curiosity among visitors as to what the giant red garden hose is all about. The sculpture by Claes Oldenburg is the attraction on this green, the benches around the round pergola provide less excitement, but that's how it's meant to be. They invite you to: Just to be.

The way back is past the playground on the left, along Engelbergerstraße. It's easy to explain why you now encounter so many students: they are at home here in the Stühlinger student village. The final stage - with various opportunities to treat yourself - leads straight to Stühlinger church square and over the bridge back into the city.

  • Author's tip:

If you want to extend the walk, take time to explore the parallel streets, Egon- and Lehenerstraße, as well as Eschholzstraße, the diverse but somewhat noisier main thoroughfare of Stühlinger.
