The Schauinsland mining museum is one of the most important visitor mines in the Black Forest and offers an impressive way to experience the region’s centuries-old mining history. In the historic tunnels, visitors gain fascinating insights into the miners’ working lives and the development of ore mining on the Schauinsland. It features all the mining periods typical of metal ore mining. Silver mining on the Schauinsland brought wealth and prosperity to the city of Freiburg in the Middle Ages. It was what made possible the construction of the cathedral, the only large Gothic church in Germany that was both begun and completed during the Middle Ages.
Visits are only possible as part of a guided tour. There is a selection of tours of varying lengths, suitable for families as well as history enthusiasts and groups. The short tour provides a concise overview of the mine, while the longer tours venture deeper into the intricate network of tunnels and offer a particularly authentic experience.
Temperatures in the mine remain around ten degrees Celsius year-round, and humidity is high. As a result, the atmosphere underground stays consistent throughout the year, providing a realistic impression of the working conditions of that era. Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are required for the longer tours.
