Jesuit Castle
A historic castle on the Schönberg with a winery, restaurants, and impressive panoramic views of Freiburg, the Kaiserstuhl, and the Black Forest.
The Jesuit Castle on the northern slope of the Schönberg in Merzhausen is one of the most striking cultural landmarks in the Freiburg area. It owes its name to the Jesuits, who received the estate as a gift in 1635 and used it as a retreat. The manor house dates back to the 17th century and has been expanded and remodeled several times over the years.
After changing hands several times and serving as a noble residence for a period, the estate is now home to the historic Freiburg Foundation Winery, operated by the Heiliggeistspital Foundation. The grounds also feature event spaces, a renovated castle hall, and dining options. The historic interiors are generally not open to the public, but the castle and grounds can be viewed from the outside.
Surrounded by vineyards and orchards, Jesuitenschloss is also a popular starting point for hikes and bike rides on the Schönberg.
