The museum of local history Freiburg for Art, Culture, and Historic Preservation in Wiehre district uniquely combines family history, city history, and historic preservation. Housed in a carefully preserved Art Nouveau villa dating from 1910, the museum tells the story of Freiburg through authentic living spaces, furniture, portraits, and personal mementos of the Hein family.
The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through three centuries of home life. Each room is dedicated to a specific era and brings social developments, craftsmanship, and historical events to life. Topics such as sustainable construction around 1910, the impact of the cholera pandemic on Freiburg, urban development under Mayor Otto Winterer, and the history of significant cultural monuments are vividly presented.
The personal atmosphere is particularly memorable. Museum founder Dr. Hermann Hein leads many of the guided tours himself, weaving historical facts together with personal family stories and his many years of experience in Freiburg’s historic preservation efforts. Lectures and cultural events regularly round out the program.
