Wasserschlössle (water castle)
Fairytale views from the Freiburger Wasserschlössle
Freiburg's Wasserschlössle is located above the Wiehre district in the Sternwald forest. However, the façade is merely a disguise. Behind it is not a real castle with a prince and carriage, but lots of water. An elevated tank has been supplying drinking water to the east of Freiburg since 1895. As with the Bächle streams, the water flows to the households without pumps, using only the natural gradient. The design was inspired by a Freiburg city seal dating back to 1245. The fountain in front of the castle offers a taste of the cool water. Every two years, the regional electricity and water supplier opens its doors at the Wasserschlössle Festival, allowing visitors to take a look behind the scenes. But even without a traditional tour of the castle, the climb is worthwhile. Once at the top, you have a wonderful view of the old town and Freiburg Minster. And unlike the Schlossberg, you may well be able to enjoy this view all to yourself. Incidentally, the Wasserschlössle can also be found down in the city - it adorns all the manhole covers in the old town, as well as the mayor's chain of office.
