Braukollektiv Freiburg (brewery collective Freiburg)
James Tutor, Gil Scheuermann, Bernhard Frenzel and Chris Murphy - the four founders of Braukollektiv Freiburg joined forces in 2013 to shake up the beer landscape in Freiburg
The brewery collective Freiburg is one of the best-known names in Freiburg’s craft beer scene. Founded by four beer-loving friends from different countries and cultures, the brewery collective Freiburg has been working since 2014 to establish high-quality, hop-forward craft beers in Freiburg, modeled after American styles. The Braukollektiv is particularly known for its distinctive India Pale Ales, Pale Ales, stouts, and seasonal specialty beers. The brewers focus on creative recipes, high-quality ingredients, and a continuous spirit of experimentation. Many of the multi-award-winning beers are inspired by American craft beer culture and possess their own distinctive character.
Instead of operating as a traditional large-scale brewery, the Braukollektiv functions as a so-called “gypsy brewer.” The beers are produced in collaboration with independent partner breweries in the Black Forest and other affiliated breweries. This flexible production method allows the team to quickly bring new ideas to life while ensuring the highest quality standards.
The brewery collective Freiburg also gained national recognition through the Craftival, which it co-founded in 2015—an international festival of beer culture that established Freiburg as a key hub of the German craft beer movement. The beers are available at various retail locations throughout the city and enjoy an excellent reputation among beer lovers far beyond the region.
