Your perfect weekend in Freiburg

From the old town to the Schlossberg (castle hill)

Your first day in Freiburg

Three days are enough to take Freiburg to your heart. Between charming old town alleyways, historic squares and cosy cafés, the city unfolds its very own rhythm: relaxed, lively and close to nature. Whether you take a stroll through the Münstermarkt (cathedral market) to sample regional specialities, browse in small boutiques, let your gaze wander from the Schlossberg (castle hill) or explore the local Schauinsland mountain - Freiburg will show you its most beautiful, enjoyable and inspiring side in 72 hours.

We have put together a route that will take you to special places, reveal the locals' favourite spots and create little moments that will stay with you. Let yourself drift, discover new things and enjoy three days full of lightness and joie de vivre.

First day

Morning & Lunch

The best way to get off to a good start in Freiburg: a stroll through the Münstermarkt (cathedral market), with a long Red sausage as a welcome snack. Take time to visit the world-famous Gothic cathedral and wander through the old town. Particularly beautiful: the picturesque "Konviktstraße" street, which takes you to the edge of the Black Forest.
For lunch, head to the Schneckenvorstadt district with its small, owner-run shops, good food and casual flair.

Afternoon & Evening

In the afternoon, it's time for the Augustian museum. Here you can experience treasures from the Middle Ages to the Baroque in a modern setting in a former monastery complex.
A good place for an aperitif in the early evening: the Alte Wache with wine from Baden right on Münsterplatz.

You can enjoy a delicious dinner at the Inn "Zum Roten Bären", for example, after which we recommend a walk to the Tanzbrunnen at the glass university library. On warm summer evenings, salsa, tango or lindy hop are played here, and you can get a feel for Freiburg's young, colourful side as a university city.

Our tip

Treat yourself to a little break in the countryside - a walk or a short stop at the Dreisam river will bring you even closer to the real Freiburg feeling. Here you can dangle your feet in the water, listen to the babble of the river and soak up the relaxed vibe of the city.

Second day

From morning to evening

The day begins with a walk along the Dreisam river, followed by a picnic at one of the streams in the city centre at lunchtime.

In the afternoon, there's time to stroll and shop in Wiehre, the Art Nouveau district in the south of Freiburg, also known for its cosy cafés such as Förster Max.
In the early evening, head up the Schlossberg (castle hill): a short climb on foot or a ride on the train, where you can expect a dream view of the city and the perfect sundowner in the beer garden on Cannon Square.

To round things off: cinema, theatre, concert or wine festival - in summer, the city offers a great open-air programme.

Your third day in Freiburg

After two days in the city, head out into nature - experience an unforgettable day on the Schauinsland and be enchanted by the vastness and beauty of the landscape. Even the way up is an experience, regardless of whether you are travelling in a sporty or relaxed manner. At the top, you will find a variety of ways to enjoy the mountains and experience the Black Forest.

Third day

Out of the city

In the morning, take the tram and bus directly to the valley station of the Schauinsland cable car. From here, the cable car takes you up to the top - past green meadows, dense forests and sweeping views until you reach an altitude of 1,284 metres.

Your day begins at the top in the fresh mountain air. You can take a leisurely stroll along the panoramic trails, take a shorter walk to the viewing tower or set off on a longer hike. You will be rewarded with impressive views - even as far as the Vosges or the Alps on a clear day. If you're in the mood for culture, visit the historic Schniederlihof farm or the visitor mine and immerse yourself in the history of the mountain. For the more adventurous, downhill scooters from Bergwelt Schauinsland are waiting to whisk you down into the valley. In between, rustic inns and mountain huts invite you to take a break - with regional specialities and unforgettable panoramas. In the afternoon, you can relax and round off the day with a final walk before the Schauinsland cable car takes you gently back down into the valley. Back in Freiburg, you can enjoy the evening with Baden cuisine and then round off your time in Freiburg in one of the cosy bars in the old town.
