That Freiburg Foolishness Feeling

“Narri – narro,” shout Gigili ghosts, weather witches, and Mooswaldwiibli (friendly old women in costumes). It’s that time again! Carnival season has finally begun. With their colorful, unusual costumes and curious, sometimes even frightening masks, Breisgau's 34 guilds of fools stroll through the city. From Schmutzige Dunschtig (Fat Thursday, Feb. 8th, 2024) to the following Tuesday, a state of exception rules the Freiburg streets. Confetti and cookies fly through the air, while brass bands and drums see to the musical accompaniment for the exuberant celebration.

Those not in town for the foolish festivities, or those still in the Fasnet (Carnival) mood after the processions have ended, can marvel at historical costumes and delve into the history of the guilds at the museum of the same name, also called the Guildhall of Fools.
