Unobstructed view of the fireworks

Glittering lights and sparkling fountains - Freiburg's sky lights up on New Year's Eve. But what goes up here is only set off privately. There are no public fireworks displays and it is not allowed to set off fireworks in the city centre. So it's all the better that Freiburg and the surrounding area offer a whole range of spots with panoramic views. Two classics are Cannon Square and the Dattler restaurant on Schlossberg Hill. Important: It's worth being early - it's hard to get a good spot after 10 pm.

If you like it quieter, it's best to go a little further out of the city - for example to the St. Ottilien forest restaurant with the forest chapel in the east of the city or southwards to the Lorettoberg. And luckily, there are also the vineyards: below the Jesuit castle of Merzhausen, you can stand in the vines and look out over glittering Freiburg. If that's not enough height for you: on the Schauinsland and Tuniberg, the city lies at your feet and the sky is wide - and colourful.

Of course you can toast the New Year with sparkling wine - but there are also more extravagant ways. Freiburg's bar scene provides the perfect mix of style, atmosphere, music and excellent signature drinks at the turn of the year. Several bars, such as the One Trick Pony at Schwabentor (Swabian Gate) or the Hemingway in the Hotel Victoria, have already been named the best in Germany.
