At the Holbein horse
A colorfully painted concrete horse in Freiburg-Wiehre - the Holbein horse is a local art symbol and a constant target of creative transformations at night.
The Holbein Horse is one of Freiburg's most charming and quirky landmarks. It has stood inconspicuously on the corner of Günterstalstraße and Holbeinplatz in the Wiehre district since 1936 - a plain, gray concrete horse by sculptor Werner Gürtner. But it only became famous through its nocturnal transformations: Time and again, unknown people paint the horse, transforming it into mythical creatures, celebrities or seasonal motifs. Whether as a zebra, unicorn or clown - the Holbein horse is changeable and always a mirror of creativity, humor and sometimes also social criticism. The campaigns are unofficial, but have long been cult: many Freiburg residents love the surprise in the morning when the horse reappears in a new guise. Today, it is considered living street art - and a symbol of the city's special sense of humor.
