Victory Monument

A fundraising campaign in a victory frenzy: After winning the war against the French in 1871, the people of Baden collected donations from Karlsruhe to Lörrach to erect a monument to their victory.

In a public competition for which 18 artists applied, the sculptor Karl Freidrich Moest was awarded the contract. He created the victory monument made of French gun barrels, which was inaugurated in 1876. The tapered pedestal, decorated with inscriptions and images of war heroes, naturally features Victoria, the goddess of victory, proudly holding a laurel wreath in the air. In 1940, the monument was supposed to be a birthday present for Adolf Hitler, but the city refused. And so, until March 2016, it stood just 100 meters away from its original location on the northern edge of the old town. Due to the construction of a new light rail line, the monument had to make way for the first time. After the completion of the new square on Friedrichring, the Victory Monument was then re-erected in its original location in front of the former Karlskaserne barracks.
