Haus zum Walfisch (Whale House)

Erasmus of Rotterdam was probably the most famous resident of the Haus zum Walfisch. The world-famous scholar resided here from 1529 to 1531 after fleeing Basel to escape the Reformation.

However, he did not find particularly flowery words for either the house or Freiburg. Almost half a millennium ago, von Rotterdam wrote about Freiburg's streams: "An artificial stream runs through all the streets of this city. It absorbs the bloody juices of butchers and butchers, the stench of all kitchens, the dirt of all houses.... This water is used to wash the sheets, clean the wine glasses, even the cooking pots."

Was he not well-disposed towards Freiburg because he didn't like the food in Baden and the pleasantly warm climate didn't agree with him? The fact is that the theologian and church critic felt disturbed by his flatmates and found the rent inappropriate. After constant quarrels, his tenancy was terminated in 1531.

It is hard to imagine how von Rotterdam could not have felt at home in the Haus zum Walfisch, as the magnificent building with its wonderfully ornate portal bay window, finials and gargoyles features countless effective stylistic elements from the late Gothic period. It was furnished with great attention to detail by Jakob Villinger von Schönenberg, Grand Treasurer of the Roman Emperor.

Today, the Sparkasse can boast the Haus zum Walfisch as its most magnificent branch.

Freiburg riddle: On the back of the current bank building in Gauchstraße, you will find a little monkey that is figuratively biting the bullet. Find out what the primate is warning you about.
