Synagogue

The old synagogue went up in flames on the night of the pogrom in 1938. Shortly after the Second World War, the town planners apparently already considered a site for a new synagogue in their sketches.

However, it was not realized until 40 years later, when the foundation stone for today's synagogue was laid in 1985. The ceremonial inauguration of the hexagonal postmodern building took place two years later. Valuable carvings from the original synagogue, which were spared from the flames, were integrated into the new building. The square of the old synagogue, opposite the municipal theater and the university library, was redesigned in 2016/2017. The central focus of the square is the synagogue fountain - a memorial and at the same time a lively, new focal point of Freiburg.
