Splendor of old gold - The imposing Semperoper Dresden is without doubt one of the most beautiful home venues an orchestra could wish for. How fortunate that the Saxon Florence on the Elbe regularly sends its top orchestra, founded in 1548 and praised by Herbert von Karajan for its "splendor of old gold", to other renowned concert venues. The Albert Konzerthaus (concert hall) cycle opens with
one of the most traditional orchestras in the world. Daniele Gatti, Chief Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden since the 2024/25 season, conducted the orchestra for the first time in 2000 - at the invitation of Giuseppe Sinopoli and also with music by Johannes Brahms. While his First Symphony had to be painstakingly constructed over many years, the Second was completed after just a few months. Pastoral and wistful, dance-like and profound, it remains the undisputed audience favorite among Brahms' symphonic works to this day.
This is preceded by Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto from 1806, a work without whose pioneering character Brahms' later Violin Concerto would hardly be conceivable. Beethoven's exuberant creativity demanded forms that not only challenged the listening habits of his time, but also sometimes overtaxed them. The dimensions of the concerto alone make it clear that the solo violin does not take on a decorative role here, but rather asserts its equal voice across the dimensions of a veritable symphony. This work finds an ideal interpreter in star violinist Augustin Hadelich. With "the assurance of a dreamwalker who merely smiles at the difficulties" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung), the American by choice with German roots, who grew up in Tuscany, faces every technical cliff, no matter how tricky, with sovereign composure.
