Program

Julio Azcano performs as a soloist and in dialog with musicians of the most diverse styles and cultures. His concert activities have taken him to numerous guitar festivals, jazz clubs and renowned venues such as the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus in Spain, La Usina del Arte in Argentina and the Shanghai Art Center. As part of the cooperative doctoral program of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the College of Music Fribourg, his dissertation project explores the preparatory practices of solo improvised performances on the concert guitar from an artistic-scientific perspective. With "Flores Negras", Julio Azcano invites the audience to a colorful web of improvisations in which sound blossoms from the vast garden of jazz and the South American guitar tradition unfold.

The guitarist Julio Azcano is active as a soloist and in cross-border dialog with musicians of the most diverse styles and cultures. As part of his doctorate at the College of Music Freiburg (DE), he is investigating improvisation on the concert guitar.

The lecture is part of the FZM lecture series "Improvising: Spontaneous Creativity in Art and Everyday Life".

In the summer semester of 2026, the Freiburg Research and Teaching Center(FZM) is organizing a lecture series on the topic of improvisation from various specialist perspectives and facets. In addition to ten lectures by members of the FZM and guests, which will take place on Wednesdays in the lecture hall of the University's Musicology Department, events with improvisational-musical performances or cross-genre performances are planned on five Monday evenings at the College of Music, two of which are part of the FZM event series "musik + wissen".

Here you will find the short program (pdf) (this file is not barrier-free) with all individual dates of the public lecture series.

The Freiburg Research and Teaching Center (FZM) is a joint institution of the College of Music and the University campus Freiburg with the aim of mutual networking in music-related research and teaching.
