An open mind - Sheku Kanneh-Mason's rise to become one of the most prominent cellists of our time has been nothing short of meteoric: In 2016, at the age of 17, he was named BBC Young Musician of the Year, followed by a globally acclaimed performance at a royal wedding in 2018, and finally entering the British album charts in 2020 with his "Elgar" album - the first cellist in the history of the top ten and the first classical instrumentalist to do so in over 30 years. In media reports, the public not only got to know the charismatic artist from Nottingham, but also his down-to-earth musical family, whose impressive commitment made the education of a whole host of highly talented siblings possible.
made possible.
As soon as Sheku Kanneh-Mason takes up the bow, the otherwise level-headed, unpretentious young musician really flares up - regardless of whether he is playing chamber music in partnership or performing as a soloist with major orchestras. "Kanneh-Mason's cello sound is an event, it bores into the ear canals, makes them vibrate", wrote Alexander Dick in the Badische Zeitung on the occasion of his Albert debut in 2024. Despite his stylistic curiosity, the versatile artist remains true to works that have long influenced him - including the two surviving cello concertos by Joseph Haydn, which still set standards for vocalism, balance and virtuoso elegance today. He will be accompanied by the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble made up of members of top international orchestras, which is celebrated as one of the world's leading chamber orchestras under its chief conductor Gábor Takács-Nagy. He has played Haydn most often, especially string quartets and chamber music, says Kanneh-Mason: "It's a language that I know and love." He continues: "Haydn has a spirit that is second to none - an open spirit."
