Dedication and beauty of sound - With her sincere dedication to music, coupled with interpretative intelligence, beauty of sound and fabulous technique, Sol Gabetta has long since conquered the world far beyond die-hard classical music fans. For years, she has been accompanied by French pianist Bertrand Chamayou when it comes to sensitively crafted chamber music. Two joint recordings document this equally inspired and inspiring partnership.
At the Albert concerts, the artist friends can be experienced with a program that makes their creative collaboration audible in a particularly intense way. The composer originally did not want to call Sergei Rachmaninov's Opus 19 a "cello sonata", as this designation would hardly do justice to the equal parts of piano and cello. The result is a work of symphonic density in which both instruments are equally challenged. It truly takes a pianist like Chamayou to master the awe-inspiring piano part - the work that Rachmaninov himself premiered in 1901.
In Benjamin Britten's Cello Sonata, composed for Rostropovich, the instruments meet in a different dialogical way, but no less intensely, with their dramatic unconditionality. Witold Lutoslawski's short "Grave", dedicated to the memory of a Polish music researcher, also spans analytical work with short motifs to form a large arc. Edvard Grieg's melodically softer but no less intense cello sonata, dedicated to his older brother John and written during a phase in which the composer was forced out of his quiet surroundings and into the fullness of life: "I must see and hear and talk about art!", forms the conclusion. A statement almost as if from the mouth of Sol Gabetta.
