Freiburg Jazz Spring - TEN Years of forum jazz e. V.
Double Concert (Intermission approx. 8:30 p.m.)
7:30 p.m. o Shuteen Erdenebaatar, piano / Nils Kugelmann, contra-alto clarinet
Two outstanding voices of young European jazz—Mongolian pianist and composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar and German bassist and clarinetist Nils Kugelmann—invite you on an extraordinary musical journey with their new program, UNDER THE SAME STARS.
What began as a personal encounter has evolved into a profound musical dialogue between two souls, as Shuteen’s hypnotic, luminous piano playing meets the mysterious timbres of Kugelmann’s contralto clarinet—a rare instrument that takes center stage here. Together, they create a soundscape that unites jazz, classical music, and film scores—a world in which their individual stories, their cultures, and their love of music intertwine in a way all their own.
In recent years, both have established themselves as defining figures of a new generation. Shuteen Erdenebaatar, born in Mongolia, has lived in Germany since 2018. She has been honored with, among other awards, the German Jazz Prize and her home country’s highest cultural award. Nils Kugelmann, an ACT artist and himself a multiple award winner, is known for his work with his own trio as well as his distinctive style as a composer.
9:00 p.m. – Jacob Karlzon 4tet at Questar
Swedish jazz pianist and composer Jacob Karlzon is often compared to the Swedish legend Esbjörn Svensson. He is also a member of the Dominic Miller 4tet. Karlzon’s playing style is characterized by technical brilliance, rhythmic and harmonic complexity, and a perfect sense of form. He has been a Steinway Artist since 2012, an international recognition of his outstanding achievements. QUESTAR is the next chapter in his musical journey; born out of a desire to explore new sounds and settings, QUESTAR combines deep grooves and flowing rhythms with boundary-pushing Nordic soundscapes. Each concert unfolds in its own unique way.
