Places of remembrance for France, Germany and Europe
The initiative to analyze and present the French lieux de mémoire, i.e. the collective political and cultural social memories in their emergence and development up to the present, goes back to Pierre Nora (1931-2025). A creative and stimulating scholar and editor, he and 121 co-authors published seven impressive volumes between 1984 and 1992, which were an immediate success and earned Pierre Nora membership of the Académie française in 2001. Impressive books about their places of remembrance were then published in rapid succession in many other countries. As a Franco-German historian, I first published three volumes on German places of remembrance together with the Berlin historian Hagen Schulze in 2001, which were written by 119 co-authors (including 34 foreign authors). Finally, in 2017, together with the Franco-German social scientist Patrice Veit and 170 international authors, I published a large book entitled "Europe" on European places of remembrance in their global dimension, initially in Paris. In 2019, the work was published in three volumes in a further expanded German edition. The lecture will explain the concept of lieux de mémoire/places of remembrance using illustrative examples from France, Germany and Europe.
