Franco-German encounters in oral memory narratives
This lecture focuses on an analysis of the documentary film "Herzklopfen - Coup de Cœur" (Bordeaux 2017), which was produced as part of a research project on autobiographical storytelling. Franco-German couples - couples in love, engaged and married - go with the filmmakers to places of remembrance and talk about how they met their partners in the other country and later built a life together in Germany or France. The journalists ask: How did the partners find their way in the foreign country, was there a 'culture shock', what obstacles had to be overcome? And how do they experience Franco-German encounters today, in a European everyday life (almost) without borders? As a representative of conversational linguistics, I will present touching - always bilingual - scenes from the film and ask: How similar and how different are the partners' shared experiences, in which language, and how do the oral, improvised narratives change depending on who is telling the story and for whom.
