Roßkopf

The Roßkopf is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Freiburg area. Rising 736.9 meters above sea level, it stands east of the city between the Dreisam Valley and the Glotter Valley and forms a prominent part of the Black Forest ridge above Freiburg.

The Roßkopf is particularly popular because of its wide range of recreational activities. Numerous hiking trails lead through the wooded slopes and over scenic sections to the summit. The well-known Kandelhöhenweg trail also runs across the mountain. Mountain bikers, runners, and walkers appreciate its easy accessibility directly from Freiburg.

The summit’s landmark is the historic Roßkopf Tower, officially known as the Friedrich Tower. Built in 1889, the observation tower rises above the treetops and offers an impressive panoramic view of Freiburg, the Kaiserstuhl, the Vosges, the Rhine Valley, and—on clear days—even as far as the Alps.

Visible even from a distance are the wind turbines on the summit plateau, which make the Roßkopf a striking landmark. Protected forest and landscape areas stretch around the summit, offering a natural contrast to the nearby city.

Visitors to the Roßkopf can easily combine their trip with a hike over Schlossberg Hill. The route is one of the most popular excursions in the Freiburg metropolitan area and combines a nature experience, exercise, and impressive views of the Breisgau metropolis.
