Reflect & Improvise – Developing Collective Theater

Reflecting & Improvising – Developing Collective Theater

Have you ever acted in a play, or have you always wanted to give it a try? Did you have any experiences with it, or were you worried that the director might make you do things you didn’t want to do? That’s exactly how I felt a few years ago. Then, by chance, I stumbled upon f.a.k.t., the feminist-anarchist activist theater collective (though to be honest, I’d been persistently asking over a long period of time if I could come by).

There, we’ve experimented with—and since refined—an approach that’s rather atypical in the theater scene: developing a play together as a group. So we all contribute our creative ideas, and through improvisation and reflection, we collectively create scenes that are gradually woven together by a common thread.

We constantly switch between acting, watching, directing, and contributing ideas. This often presents challenges, because dealing with individuals’ artistic ideas is a very sensitive matter. It requires a lot of discussion and relationship-building.

In this 3-day workshop, I’d like to share some of my experiences in this area and some theater exercises with you. This has great potential to be fun, exhausting, intense, and also wonderful.

So if you’re interested in trying your hand at acting and directing and/or are curious about working in a collective—AND have time for the entire workshop schedule—please feel free to sign up. To ensure the group stays cohesive, it’s important that you only participate if you’re available for all three days. And who knows… Maybe this will lead to a new group forming?

When? Fri, Sept. 11, 2026, 5–8 p.m.

Sat, Sept. 12, 2026, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Sun, Sept. 13, 2026, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.

Where? B.i.K. Movement Space at SUSI, Vaubanallee

Who’s leading it? Änni (KomKombinat), a freelance communication trainer and voice coach. That means I make a living leading workshops and seminars.

Who is it for? FLINTA* individuals (women, lesbians, inter, trans, and agender) who’d like to get to know themselves and others through theater—no prior experience is necessary. Secure your spot now and register by September 7, 2026, at mail@komkombinat.de.

You’ll practice:

- Safe improvisational theater, voice exercises, elements of physical theater, and the veto principle

- Reflection on collective decision-making

- Switching between role-playing and the director’s perspective

- Sensitive handling of artistic feedback

How much does it cost?

I’ve calculated the number of hours I spend on preparation, follow-up, facilitation, and organization (promotion, etc.), and the participation fee is set so that I end up with a living wage per hour. However, I’m also open to discussing options with anyone who can’t afford the base price but really wants to participate. Maybe we can work out a barter arrangement or something like that :) A deposit of 30€ is due via bank transfer after registration; the remainder is payable in cash on site.

- Base price: 150€

For people with limited financial resources. If your monthly disposable

income is tight and you have hardly any savings, this price is intended for you.

- Regular price: 180€

For people with a stable but limited budget. You make it through the month just fine

by the end of the month, may have a small nest egg, but don’t have much of a financial cushion.

- Supporter price: €210

For people who are financially secure. You have some money left over each month and

you have savings or a secure family/structural safety net.

- Solidarity Support Price: €240

For people with significant financial flexibility. You have a regular, secure income and substantial savings or prospects for wealth (e.g., inheritance, real estate, reserves).

Accessibility:

The BiK is located in the basement and accessible only via stairs; the event has no sound amplification, loud music sometimes plays, there are restrooms nearby (not wheelchair-accessible), and there is no separate quiet room; we take regular breaks.
