A stroll of good taste

Experience the variety of Freiburg cuisine

The way to a person’s heart, as we all know, is through their stomach. Germany’s southernmost major city offers its guests the whole range of culinary delights. Drawn in by the Old Town with its tourist attractions such like the Cathedral, Bächle, or the Schlossberg, more than three million visitors find their way to the city on the Dreisam every year.

Guests can look forward to plenty of sunshine, friendly people, and a unique gastronomic variety, because: Its restaurants, taverns, cafés, and all manner of street food stations always make a stay in Freiburg a culinary adventure, where new worlds of flavors fuse with one-of-a-kind experiences to form lasting impressions.

Cathedral Plaza – From hand to mouth

At the crack of dawn, when Freiburg’s restaurants are still preparing for the guests of the dawning day, the Cathedral Market waits to be overtaken with a potpourri of regional products from local farms. Fruit, vegetables, mushrooms, herbs, honey, and jam – the foundations of Baden cuisine can be found here. The high, Gothic tower of the Freiburg Cathedral provides the appropriate historical ambiance.

At the foot of the tower, the market's specialty number one – the “Lange Rote im Weckle” or “Long Red in a bun” – unfolds its beguilingly fragrant allure. Those who succumb to its call should be prepared for the all-important question: “With or without onions?” With the enormous output speed, there’s no time to ponder over it. But if you don’t feel like a foot-long, grilled sausage with no casing, then a look over your shoulder is enough. Just a few steps away, meatless alternatives such as tofu snacks and the finest baked goods whet the appetite for more. Stefans Käsekuchen (Stefan’s Cheesecakes) in particular is considered a Freiburg institution – a “must have” for all cake lovers.

Culinary stroll through Freiburg’s Old Town

Good taste is right at home in Freiburg’s Old Town. You won’t have to search long to find a good restaurant in the city center. Vis-à-vis the Freiburg Cathedral, for example, is the Hotel & Restaurant Oberkirch. In a cozy atmosphere between a tiled stove and wood-paneled walls, you can enjoy regional specialties and seasonal dishes.

Between the Schwabentor (Swabian Gate) and the Freiburger Münster (Cathedral) is the Schwarzwälder Hof with the Restaurant Winzerstübchen (meaning “Little Vintner's Room”). This traditional Freiburg restaurant combines the variety of aromas of the Black Forest with Portuguese finesse and regularly gives its guests plenty to eat. At Dinner & Jazz, every third Wednesday of the month, you have the opportunity to enjoy a “New Orleans experience.”

Eating in Freiburg – From Michelin Star cuisine to the entire world

The culinary range of Freiburg’s restaurants is enormous, spanning a Michelin Star restaurant to snacks with style. If you want a bit more, then the Colombi Hotel Restaurant is the right place for you. The elegant wood paneling in the restaurant rooms lets you know that here, the high art of fine dining is celebrated. There’s a good reason a bright Michelin Star has been shining above the gourmet restaurant for more than 34 years.
Alternatively, the Market Hall – between Bertoldsbrunnen and Martin’s Gate – offers the opportunity to start a culinary expedition around the world in Freiburg. Sip some champagne. Make a detour to Afghanistan, or let your palate travel to China.

In August, the annual Street Food Market is held on the exhibition grounds, with 40 trucks presenting a broad palette of international food and drink. The culinary offerings are flanked by a children’s program, a beach area, and plenty of music.

True gourmets meet in the fall at the Freiburg Messe (Exhibition and Conference Center) in the Plaza Culinaria. As one of the most important events of its kind in South Germany, it offers the opportunity to experience real top chefs at work and to get to know specialties from all over the world.

Trend restaurants serve fast food classics

Burger restaurants are trendy – in Freiburg, as well. A visit to FreiBurger on Schiffstrasse is absolutely worth it. Here, grilled beef burgers and homemade sauces are served on a lava stone in a rustic ambiance. On Niemensstrasse, the Burger Chalet uses the finest regional beef while also providing options for vegetarians. According to the motto “Fresh. Tasty. Good,” they serve a delicious, meatless burger made from a vegetable polenta patty with carrot, zucchini, corn, and chickpeas.

If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a traditional currywurst with or without fries, you are sure to be attracted to Curry & Fritz on Universitätsstrasse. Available in three levels of spiciness, the delicious currywurst enjoys a legendary status in Freiburg.

Homestyle food in Freiburg’s restaurants

Pancake soup, Maultäschle in an onion melt, and Knöpfle (spätzle) – the traditional cuisine of Freiburg and the surrounding region has a lot to offer. There’s a reason the city’s guests love the homestyle cuisine of Freiburg’s restaurants. In an idyllic location on the “island” and in a cozy ambiance, you will be spoiled with regional specialties in the restaurant “Zum rauhen Mann”. The “Grosser Meyerhof” is similar. In one of the oldest houses in Freiburg, you can enjoy the temptations of Baden cuisine alongside a Bächle under a ceiling of grapevines.

Beer fans will appreciate the Hausbrauerei Feierling brewery. Situated very close to Augustinerplatz, you can look over the brewers’ shoulders and enjoy the hearty fruits of their labor. You can't think of Freiburg’s dining scene without the Gasthaus Löwen. Since 1970, this family-run tavern in Freiburg’s Old Town has been a popular destination for Baden cuisine and regional drinks.

Freiburg restaurants celebrate regional specialties

Guests with a predilection for culinary delights won’t have it easy in Freiburg. On the contrary, they are spoiled for choice. Do you value a romantic ambiance and homestyle regional cuisine with seasonally-inspired dishes? Then the “Sichelschmiede” on Insel is a good place to start. Or perhaps a little more rustic? Then go to Tacheles, where you’ll never miss a soccer broadcast again.

A visit to the Schwabentörle is completely different. Located near the Swabian Gate, Baden classics are served and beer and wine culture are cultivated. The UC Uni Café, on the other hand, is a relaxed locale. Late risers can count on all-day breakfast, and a trained barista serves hot coffee specialties.

Enjoy the wide world of coffee

The Freiburg Municipal Park is a green oasis in the city center. Here, you can relax and take a deep breath. Café Marcel is located directly at the entrance to the Schlossberg railway (Schlossberg railway). A visit to the former kiosk will be rewarded with excellent coffee, French pastries, and an unobstructed view of the blue sky.

Good coffee is also available at Kolben Kaffee on Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse. The Café Strass is a cozy, casual place for a cuppa joe. And Stefans Käsekuchen, the little local celebrity, is there too. What more could one want? Maybe a vitamin shot, in which case, let's go to the Saftlädele. On Schusterstrasse, freshly pressed products are offered in all variations.

Restaurants in Freiburg offer the taste of the entire world

Freiburg is a cosmopolitan city. The variety of different restaurants with different cuisines are an impressive reflection of this.

No matter which cuisine you prefer: Freiburg’s restaurants, which serve dishes and specialties from the most diverse regions of the world, can spoil you as well as those interested in local cuisine. Asian restaurants in Freiburg, for example, have many fans of their rituals and customs. Chinese, Korean, or Japanese – the fresh preparation and use of healthy ingredients in particular are what make the dishes so popular with guests.

The same applies to Freiburg restaurants offering vegetarian and vegan dishes, which are enjoying increasing popularity. Or maybe something out of the ordinary? Then simply let yourself be enchanted by the hospitality and dishes of Arabian food.

Freiburg restaurants – A melting pot of good taste

The restaurants of Freiburg can offer “la dolce vita.” Did you know that Freiburg actually has a close connection to the sweet life of the Italians? As far back as 1900, the city had a lively exchange with northern Italy. Around 50 Italian restaurants and pizzerias in Freiburg today prove that this connection is more topical than ever. European integration has done the rest. So it’s not surprising that, in Freiburg, restaurants with Greek, Spanish, or Mediterranean menus are part of everyday life.

In many cases, the different timbres of the European core languages in Freiburg’s restaurants are impressive proof of the convergence of Europe and the cosmopolitanism of Germany’s southernmost city. The fact that Freiburg, in the Breisgau region, has retained its culinary independence despite its diversity is shown by the “Long Red”. With the nickname “Cathedral Plaza sausage,” it is and remains today the crispiest landmark of Freiburg.
