Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that occurs in around 10% of women of childbearing age. PCOS is a syndrome in which there are many small cysts in the ovaries - although most of those affected do not actually have cysts. Instead, it is a complex hormonal disorder. Typical characteristics are irregular ovulation, an increase in the male hormone and enlarged ovaries with many small follicles. PCOS can lead to cycle disorders and thus to an unfulfilled desire to have children as well as acne, hair loss or increased body hair. Obesity and insulin resistance are also common, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. Failure to ovulate means that the lining of the uterus is not shed regularly, which can increase the risk of cancer. Depression, anxiety disorders and low self-esteem are not uncommon. Although there is still no complete cure for PCOS apart from the onset of the menopause, most symptoms can be alleviated very well. This requires individual advice and treatment.
