A very lively and diverse literary scene has established itself in Slovenia, with family and historical novels, village stories, coming of age stories with love themes and generational conflict, but also politically ambitious texts with anarchic defiance against the authorities - Slovenia was the guest country at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2023. We will look at this pleasingly vital and diverse new European literature using the example of Maja Haderlap's novel The Angel of Oblivion and some of the stories in the anthology of Slovenian short prose (The Time of the Short Story) edited by Tomo Vork. Maja Haderlap's novel, which will be the focus of our reading, is the work of an Austrian author about her Slovenian family, a moving family novel set against the backdrop of a cruel history. It has inspired critical acclaim, won the author the Bachmann Prize and will also give us much pleasure in reading and discussing it. In collaboration with www.literaturferien.de
