No compromises - It sounds so simple: Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili explains the start of her great career as she has always wanted to play the piano. "I sat at the piano for the first time at the age of three, at five I played from sheet music, at six I knew I wanted to be a musician - and I never thought about stopping." Why stop when you can soar on the wings of the piano at the age of six for your first performance as a soloist with an orchestra and on your first European tour at the age of ten?
Born in Batumi, Georgia, in 1987 and encouraged early on by her mother, Khatia Buniatishvili studied at the conservatory in Tbilisi and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. The fact that she won 3rd prize at the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition in Tel Aviv in 2008 and made her debut at Carnegie Hall in the same year marked the start of an international career that regularly takes the pianist to the world's major orchestras, festivals and concert halls. Despite the glittering publicity of a world star, she has retained her spontaneity and impulsiveness - qualities that are particularly evident in her solo recitals. There, her now famous expressiveness, which is also evident in her facial expressions and body language, seeks no compromises. "I act more spontaneously, let my emotions run free and play differently every time," says Buniatishvili, describing her approach. The composition of her concert program is a highly individual matter for the artist. "The score is like a letter to establish a connection between the composer and myself," she says. "You can't hide emotions and thoughts in music - you can't lie."
