Joseph Schlippe shaped Freiburg's cityscape in the 20th century like no other. For 25 years, he was responsible for the city's construction: from 1925 as head of the municipal building department, then as municipal senior building director, who willingly implemented the urban planning ideas of the Nazi regime. During the Second World War, he was also responsible for monuments and art in Alsace. As head of the Freiburg Reconstruction Office, he continued his career immediately after the war on behalf of the French occupying power. Schlippe's concept was characterized by so-called Heimatschutz architecture. He rejected historicism and Art Nouveau just as decisively as New Objectivity and Bauhaus architecture.
With Dr. Ralf Müller, Dr. Wulf Rüskamp, Prof. Dr. Jörg Stadelbauer and others
The two speakers, the historian Ralf Müller and the former editor of the Badische Zeitung, Wulf Rüskamp, are two proven experts on the subject who have researched and published on Joseph Schlippe from different perspectives in recent years. Their contributions will be placed in a broader context by a lecture by geographer Jörg Stadelbauer, who will talk about the development of Freiburg's cityscape in the 19th and 20th centuries.
