Stories from the Freiburg student prisons

Old Universities such as the University campus Freiburg usually had their own courts and also student prisons, so-called "Karzer". When the universities were only allowed to hear disciplinary cases, a "romantic" carceral phase developed in which detention in a carceral was seen less as a temporary deprivation of liberty and more as a distinction and social event.

The last two dungeons in Freiburg were set up in the tower of College Building I in 1911 and have been largely preserved. There are many stories to tell, such as a pompous procession into the dungeons or a carved window seat board. The 32-station wall frieze in the Sommerkarzer will also be presented.

Location: BGV-Stube in the historical merchants' hall.

Participation is free. Registration is not required.
