German-American pianist Benjamin Lackner released several albums with his long-standing trio before making his ECM debut in 2022 with Last Decade. On the album, the Berlin-based pianist is accompanied by his ECM colleagues Mathias Eick and Manu Katché as well as bassist Jérome Regard. The album was highly praised by critics on its release. Stereophile magazine wrote: "ECM has released some good albums in 2022, but few are as beautiful as this one." In the Swiss weekly Weltwoche, Peter Rüedi described Lackner's music as "a kind of classical music" and praised it as a "masterpiece that dispenses with any soloistic 'extravagance' and spectacular artistry in an almost hypnotic melodic vortex of eight original compositions by Lackner and instead offers a highly integrated sound and an intimate exchange of ideas".
The Benjamin Lackner Quintet brings together five independent voices from the European jazz scene, with Maciej Obara and Mathias Eick as formative forces on the frontline. Led by German pianist and composer Benjamin Lackner, the quintet is rooted in a strong melodic signature, finely nuanced ensemble interaction and a shared sensibility for space, timbre and narrative progression.
