Benefit concert - Elijah -Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy

"Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) saw the biblical Elijah, who inspired him to write his second oratorio, as a "true prophet through and through, as we could use him again today". The composer characterizes the Old Testament prophet quite aptly as "strong, zealous, even evil and angry and dark". All of these characteristics can be found in the two Old Testament books of Kings. Elijah appears there as the archetypal figure of a prophet in Israel, as a "called caller" who comes into conflict with the priests of the Baal religion and with King Ahab. He works miracles and finally ascends to heaven on a fiery chariot. And all these Old Testament features of Elijah, being biblically inspired, are now also musically inspiring for the composer Mendelssohn." (Meinrad Walther)

Cappella Nova Freiburg e.V. will perform the work on November 1, 2025 at 5 pm in the Maria-Hilf-Kirche, Freiburg, Schützenallee under the direction of Katharina Skala. The performers are:
